Although Ziggy Stardust was only “alive” for just over a year, it was considered one of the most electric and exciting periods in rock history. On this day in 1972, Bowie played his first gig as Ziggy Stardust at the Toby Jug Pub in Tolworth, England.
Bowie adopted the persona of Ziggy Stardust in the early 1970′s, challenging the core beliefs of rock at the time, creating one of the biggest cults in pop culture. Bowie became totally immersed in the Ziggy persona, onstage he could dress up and become a totally different person. Eventually it became impossible for Bowie to separate Ziggy from himself offstage. Questioning his sanity, Bowie dramatically and abruptly retired Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars onstage at the Hammersmith Odeon on July 3, 1973.
The world was never the same.
