So charted at #1 on the UK Album Chart and #2 on the Billboard 200 in the US. So was Gabriel’s first studio album to have an actual title. The success of So earned Gabriel two awards at the Brit Awards in 1987 for Best British Male Solo Artist and Best British Video for “Sledgehammer”.
Over the years, Gabriel has played a major role in promoting world music, he pioneered digital distribution methods for music and has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. In 1989 he started Real World Records, a label used to record and produce world music.
