KRCL Presents: Calexico

August 10, 2011 in Concerts, KRCL Events by Jamie @ 6:38 pm

I last saw Calexico during their tour with Iron & Wine in support of the two bands’ collaborative effort, In the Reins. Since then, the Tuscon collective has put out two proper full-length albums plus a handful of tour LPs and, most recently, two soundtracks to indie films Circo and The Guard. Their involvement with the silver screen is apt, with Joey Burns and John Convertino crafting sweeping, cinematic songs that often take your breath away. Tonight should be a beautiful concert. Don’t miss opening act Jay William Henderson. The former frontman for Band of Annuals is currently working on a solo album and chances are his set will feature many of the record’s new tunes.

Local Band Bronco Digs Deep to Shine Bright on New Album

June 10, 2011 in KRCL Events, New Music by admin @ 4:29 pm

Salt Lake’s own Bronco is an alt-country rock outfit that continues to gain well-deserved
notoriety. Recently, Bronco released their second full-length album, Painting Pictures
of a Perfect Life
. Mike Sasich (local producer extraordinaire) recorded the album, and
the result of the partnership is stunning.

Tyler Anderson’s lyrics are an ode to those storytelling songs that seem to have fallen by
the wayside for many bands. Anderson is extremely adept at creating a vivid and heartfelt
narrative in the span a 3-5 minute song.  These poignant stories form the backbone of
nearly every piece on Painting Pictures. In addition, a full band brilliantly supports
Anderson’s bare-bones lyrical delivery. Steady drums, warm lead guitar, piano, and
vocal harmonies are all mixed skillfully, making the songs a shining achievement for
the whole group.

The album’s melancholy tone is achieved masterfully, while avoiding a feeling of
self-pity or melodramatic whining. These are songs about hard luck and living with what
cannot be changed. Having lost their drummer, Mike Kuczma in May 2010 due to a drug
overdose, Bronco was fully prepared to write an album dedicated to the pitfalls of
pretending that life is perfect. The second track, “You’re Too Good To Have A Good
Time,” is taken from a conversation Anderson had with Kuczma before his death.
A heart wrenching tale of a friend’s reckless ways and helplessness, this song touches
on the universal hardships of close relationships with deeply personal insight. It is
these lyrical feats, in combination with a strong and steady backing band that makes
Painting Pictures of a Perfect Life a notable success for an exciting local group.

Bronco will perform at KRCL’s Hidden Hollow Concert Series in Sugarhouse on
August 5th.

KRCL’s Music Meets Movies Joins the Circus

June 8, 2011 in KRCL Events by admin @ 8:31 pm

If you have seen the “Rolling Stones Rock n’ Roll Circus” before, it will likely prove as
fantastic as it did on the first screening. If you haven’t seen Rock n’ Roll Circus, take my
word for it: this concert film is pure amusement. This Thursday June 9th, at Brewvies,
KRCL will be screening this bonanza of music, acrobatics and freaky sixties-ness. Under
the big top (yes the set is an actual small circus tent) The Rolling Stones presented
performances from some of the foremost figures of rock’s golden age. The one-hour
running time features live performances from Jethro Tull, The Who, Taj Mahal,
John Lennon’s and Eric Clapton’s supergroup-The Dirty Mag, and of course, The Stones.

If you’re like me, you love a good moment of Mick Jagger screaming into the camera, or
Pete Townsend jumping and thrashing at his guitar; you find the idea of John Lennon,
Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell playing the same song on stage
electrifying; you think combining these elements with zany circus antics is a great idea;
if you’re like me, you will love this rock n’ roll circus

KRCL 90.9 FM will screen “The Rolling Stones’ Rock n’ Roll Circus” on Thursday June 9th at
Brewvies  Cinema Pub as part of our Music Meets Movies series. You must be 21 to enter.

There will be two showings, at 7pm and 8:30pm.
Tickets are $7, or $5 when you present your KRCL member card.

Hip-Hop thing. It includes IDM, Left-Field, Chillout and all colors of the electronic pallet.
Tonight is the preliminary round. The finals are on Thursday, May 19th.

After the Beat Battle, head over to Urban Lounge to catch the Parisian pop-star, Yelle.
She is on her U.S. tour supporting her sophomore release, Safari Disco Club. Yelle
performed in the Twin Cities a few days ago and apparently, Minneapolis will never
be the same. She and her entourage make fun get-out-of-your-head music. Opening
for Yelle are guests The French Horn Rebellion, as well as local favorites Muscle Hawk.

Record Store Day!

April 15, 2011 in KRCL Events, New Music, News by Jamie @ 12:24 pm

Now in its fourth year, Record Store Day started as a response to the gloom-and-doom stories concerning the demise of mom-and-pop shops. Contrary to popular belief, the sky is not falling and many record retailers are actually thriving! The event has blossomed into an international celebration of the small businesses that fill our continued need for physical albums, and that act as invaluable community partners.
