Salt Lake’s own Bronco is an alt-country rock outfit that continues to gain well-deserved
notoriety. Recently, Bronco released their second full-length album, Painting Pictures
of a Perfect Life. Mike Sasich (local producer extraordinaire) recorded the album, and
the result of the partnership is stunning.
Tyler Anderson’s lyrics are an ode to those storytelling songs that seem to have fallen by
the wayside for many bands. Anderson is extremely adept at creating a vivid and heartfelt
narrative in the span a 3-5 minute song. These poignant stories form the backbone of
nearly every piece on Painting Pictures. In addition, a full band brilliantly supports
Anderson’s bare-bones lyrical delivery. Steady drums, warm lead guitar, piano, and
vocal harmonies are all mixed skillfully, making the songs a shining achievement for
the whole group.
The album’s melancholy tone is achieved masterfully, while avoiding a feeling of
self-pity or melodramatic whining. These are songs about hard luck and living with what
cannot be changed. Having lost their drummer, Mike Kuczma in May 2010 due to a drug
overdose, Bronco was fully prepared to write an album dedicated to the pitfalls of
pretending that life is perfect. The second track, “You’re Too Good To Have A Good
Time,” is taken from a conversation Anderson had with Kuczma before his death.
A heart wrenching tale of a friend’s reckless ways and helplessness, this song touches
on the universal hardships of close relationships with deeply personal insight. It is
these lyrical feats, in combination with a strong and steady backing band that makes
Painting Pictures of a Perfect Life a notable success for an exciting local group.
Bronco will perform at KRCL’s Hidden Hollow Concert Series in Sugarhouse on
August 5th.
