Though Cliven Bundy has only recently made headlines, anti-government sentiment is nothing new to Utah. Eric S. Peterson from the Salt Lake City Weekly, explains that Bundy’s brand of political fundamentalism exists upon a spectrum that spans organized efforts like the Tea Party, to the more violent extremes of the Lafferty Brothers. In his recent two part series, Peterson explores the political views that led to the infamous Lafferty murders and connects them a strain of political thought advocated by the Jon Birch Society and Ezra Taft Benson. Peterson lays out the “radical dualism” (us vs. them) that motivates political and religious extremists of all varieties.
