The Long Memory – Remembering Utah Phillips

by Troy Williams

Utah Phillips famously declared, “the long memory is the most radical idea in this country. It is the loss of that long memory which deprives our people of that connective flow of thoughts and events that clarifies our vision, not of where we’re going, but where we want to go.” What are the consequences of forgetting our past; the struggle of organized labor, collective bargaining, child labor law and life before the social safety net? Nick welcomes historian Jeff Nichols and Duncan Phillips to reflect on the life, music and moral teachings of the late Utah Phillips.
