Event by Mental Healthy FiT - Ending Stigma: "Join us to celebrate Mental Health Acceptance Month with a Utah Premiere Screening of Happy. Based on the life of Leonard 'Porkchop' Zimmerman, HAPPY is more than merely an artist’s story. This inspiring documentary feature is about love, loss, grieving, and the incredible healing power of art. A film about finding that one thing that gives you strength, eases your pain, and in time... helps you find your happiness. Part of Focus on Mental Health, we'll be presenting the Utah premiere in May, in conjunction with a special expressive arts workshop with the film's creative team and a Q&A with the film's director and star Michael McKinley and Leonard Zimmerman.   • Wildlife Conservation Film Night, 6:30 p.m. at The Gallivan Center, 281 Weechquootee Place, SLC. Event by Utah's Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary: "Join Utah's Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary for a free movie night centered around wildlife conservation. See 14 short films about conservation initiatives worldwide as part of the Zoos Committing to Conservation-ZACC Conference. Meet wildlife filmmakers, enjoy food trucks, and participate in a Q & A session after each film. Admission is free for everyone, and tickets are not needed."

  • Great Salt Lake Bird Festival, Eccles Wildlife Education Center, 1157 S. Waterfowl Way, Farmington. "Join us at the 2024 festival for over 60 birding field trips across the Wasatch Front, 11 workshops led by local organizations, 3 exciting evening events with incredible speakers, and free Family Day activities."

Friday, May 17:

  • Bloom & Belong, 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State St., SLC. Event by Friends, Allies, and Mentors of the Lgbtq+ Community - FAM: "FAM is excited to host our fourth rally for LGBTQ inclusion in Utah Schools. This has been a challenging year for our LGBTQ students, families, and educators — especially our trans and non-binary stakeholders. Let’s show up and show some love for our LGBTQ-identifying youth and show them that we never stop advocating for them to be represented and thrive in Utah schools. Even if you don’t have a K12 child in school, we hope you will still join us to spread love and promote more inclusive schools. Bring a car full of friends and families to join! We have a special guest, A.J. Irvings, reading her book, The Wishing Flower."

  • NAMIWalks Utah 2024 - Mental Health Awareness Walk, 9:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 1985 W. 7800 S., West Jordan. Event by NAMI Utah: "Join us for a fun social in-person event. Gather a friend or family member, put on your walking shoes, and get outside and enjoy the sunshine with other people who also care about breaking the stigma around mental illness!   • 12th annual SLUG Cat race, 4:00 p.m. til party ends at SLUG HQ/Saturday Cycles, 244 S. 500 W., SLC. Event by SLUG Mag: "Calling all two-wheeled pedal enthusiasts! It’s time to lug out that bicycle, slug off your puffer coat, and get ready for the 12th Annual SLUG Cat Presented by Fat Tire and New Belgium Brewing. This alley cat–style bike race sends riders all over downtown SLC to solve clues, play games, and win points as they race toward the finish line in hopes of obtaining the grand prize! The race takes place Saturday, May 18, with registration starting at 4 p.m. and a 5 p.m. race kickoff. Prizes at 7:30 p.m., followed by afterparty. 

Tuesday, May 21:
  • Public Hearing on proposed SLC Sports District tax increase 7:00 p.m. at Salt Lake City Hall 451 S. State Street or online"The City Council will hold a public hearing to get feedback from residents about the proposed sales tax increase at its 7 p.m. formal meeting on May 21 at Salt Lake City Hall. Residents can also tune in online and comment via Zoom. Information on how to access the Zoom meeting will be uploaded at https://bit.ly/3JSLOp0 24 hours before the meeting begins."

  • , 150 S. Regent St., SLC. Fri: 5-10pm; Sat: 4-10pm. "Don’t miss the main event on Block 70, surrounding Eccles Theater. Stroll along Main Street and Regent Street between 100 and 200 South to see traveling and local street performers at the annual Salt Lake City Busker Festival. The festival is free, and chock full of quirky and memorable entertainment for all ages." FREE

  • Crying With Laughter - A Youth Mental Health Awareness Show, 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Fit To Recover, 1397 S. 800 W., SLC. Event by Mental Healthy FiT - Ending Stigma and PBS Utah: "Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month by laughing together. No experience necessary. We’ll inspire each other to find the light in the dark... then get on stage and tell everyone! No performance necessary. Youth of all ages! We’re teaming up with PBS Utah to get ready for the premiere of Roots of Comedy with Jesus Trejo. A special early release of all six episodes of the series will stream starting May 24. The series will also be available to stream on the PBS YouTube channel, following the television broadcast premiere on PBS Utah June 21 at 9 p.m. Come along to the workshops to craft your set, then show off what you’ve got on May 29th supported by comedian Steve Soelberg who chooses to do this all the time!   • National Learn to Row Day - 2024, 8:00-11:00 a.m. at Great Salt Lake State Park & Marina, 13312 W. 1075 S., Magna. Event by Great Salt Lake Rowing: "Have you ever wanted to learn to row? Come and get a taste of what rowing on the Great Salt Lake is all about at our National Learn To Row Day!   • Authorship & the Black Experience in Utah: A Juneteenth Workshop with Marriott Library & Sema Hadithi, 11:30a-4:30p, UoU Marriott Library, room 1705F. "Sema Hadithi is partnering with the Marriott Library to provide a very different Juneteenth event. There will be a panel discussion, a make-and-take of a zine, and oral history interviews surrounding 'Your Black Experience in Utah'. Note: last year when we did ten (10) oral history interviews on this same subject we interviewed both Black Americans, Africans, and White Americans.   • 38th National Veterans Golden Age Games, Salt Lake City. "The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System and National Veterans Golden Age Games are looking for nearly 2,000 volunteers to give back to our Veterans as they go for the gold in Salt Lake this summer. Nearly 1,100 Veterans from across the country will descend on Salt Lake from August 24-29 for the 38th National Veterans Golden Age Games. The Golden Age Games serve Veterans 55 and older who receive care at VA medical centers. We are looking for volunteers of all ages. The only restrictions are ages 5-13 must be accompanied by a parent and 14-17 must have parental permission." To register to volunteer, click here.
