Al's good in the agrihood on tonight's Punk Rock Farmer Friday edition of RadioACTive. Many Cultures One Sky with SkyWatcher Leo T. Tonight: Planets Venus and Mars are visiting Leo the Lion and Regulus, and there is a piece on The Cat's Eyes in Scorpius. Plus, Perseverance Rover on Mars explores Jezero Crater by helicopter, and we check on a distant exoplanet that is very reflective with metal clouds! Addison Marr of Recycle Utah on a way to support their work to reduce waste sent to landfills and eat well. The nonprofit operates a recycling center in Park City where it accepts all major recyclables as well as many hard-to-recycle items. For a list, click here.

  • Aug. 12: 100 Mile Meal, 5:00-9:00 p.m. at Red Pine Lodge, Park City. Event by Recycle Utah: "Recycle Utah invites you to celebrate our local food, farms, and economy by joining us at our 8th Annual 100 Mile Meal. This year’s 100 Mile Meal is hosted at the Red Pine Lodge at Park City Mountain Resort, Canyons Village. The 100 Mile Meal will feature live music, local wine and beer, and a five-course dinner menu featuring ingredients sourced from farms within a 100-mile radius of Recycle Utah." Al’s Urban Farm Report, featuring Tony Richards of the Utah Dept. of Agriculture on the state of ag, big and small, in Utah. Plus, the 2023 Soil Health Equipment Grant, applications for which are due Aug. 18th! Eligible equipment is required to have a tie to implementing one of the following soil health principles:

  1. Keeping the soil covered.
  2. Minimizing soil disturbance (physical or chemical)
  3. Maximizing biodiversity
  4. Keeping a living root as long as possible
  5. Integrating livestock.

What’s Fresh, featuring Al's visits with growers Blue Spring Farm and . Look for them at the Downtown SLC Farmers Market, held every Saturday from 8a-2p at Pioneer Park through October. And KRCL will be broadcasting live from 7a-10a tomorrow — Saturday, July 15 — at the market!

***Service Opportunity: Red Acre Center Northern Utah Farmers Guild is hosting a service project at Madsnacks Produce at 4353 River Rd., Kamas, UT, on Friday, July 21, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. to help them get on top of a mad-weedy-grassy problem in their production beds. Things to bring:

  • Plenty of water
  • Work gloves
  • A favorite handtool for weeding
  • Proper attire: The farm is at 6500 ft so the sun in a bit more intense. Wear long sleeve shirts, pants and a hat and maybe a jacket as we'll be working in the evening.
  • Good news: Mosquitoes are pretty low in Oakley
  • Parking: In the driveway, along the front of the house; in the gravel or on the street in front of or across from house.
