Back-to-school also means learning differences come into focus. RadioACTive talks with Utah filmmaker Jenny Mackenzie about her documentary Right to Read and checks in with Decoding Dyslexia Utah. Ashley Brown's back with Take a Hike and the Get to the River Festival. Plus, Haymaker Film Festival director Joshua McGillis stops by with the 2025 lineup.

It's All Action for Local Fall Film Festival

Haymaker Film Festival an independent (and unconventional) film festival dedicated to showcasing contemporary action cinema and its gearing up for their screening in October! Joshua McGillis, founder and festival director stops by with the 2025 lineup including two filmmakers in KRCL's studio:

  • Kent Lloyd is the director of Waterlogged, a film about a cop that gets under water with her CI's and needs to find a way out. Kent is an experienced stunt coordinator and teaches stunt classes as Spearhead Stunts through his gym in Lindon, UT.
  • Ryan Dalan is the director of Prevail, an art house/ action film about a ruthless hitman that questions his loyalty when he is ordered to kill his twin brother. The film also stars his father and other family members, and showcases Filipino martial arts (of which his father is an instructor). 

Right to Read for all Children

As our children head back to school we look at revolutions in reading with Emmy award winning, documentary filmmaker, Jenny Mackenzie and her documentary Right to Read (2023)

Dyslexia, a Gift in Disguise

Decoding Dyslexia Utah's, co-founder Phoebe Beacham, since 2013 has since dedicated her work to advocacy, awareness, and education for the dyslexic and disability community. With leadership experience in nonprofit development, education, and healthcare management, she empowers parents, students, and teachers while also tutoring struggling readers.

Local parent Brooke DuMann is a lifelong Utahn and mother of two school aged boys, one of whom has dyslexia.  She recently began volunteering with Decoding Dyslexia Utah and is passionate about learning all she can to become an advocate for others.

Take a Hike

Local hiking expert Ashley Brown, author of Urban Trails: Salt Lake City, shares her hike of the week and checks in Shelby Strickler with Get to the River Festival which will be happening throughout September. 
"The Get to the River Festival is a month of events and activities each September across the 50-mile Jordan River Parkway. It includes diverse outdoor recreation, conservation, arts and cultural, and social experiences that spark discovery, stewardship, creativity, and fun."
