Diverted, a film directed by Valene Peratrovich

Against the backdrop of the Great Salt Lake’s dwindling water levels, a new documentary film that centers Indigenous perspectives about what to do will make its feature-length screening debut with two dates in November. Filming for “Diverted” began in 2023 as a personal passion project by Director Valene Peratrovich and producers McCaulee Blackburn and Cristian Martinez. They and others then continued working on the film in a class setting at Salt Lake Community College before receiving a grant from the Wake the Great Salt Lake (WakeGSL) project to expand it. Peratrovich, Blackburn, Martinez, and Wake the GSL's Siri Vlasic join the show tonight.

Thurs, Nov. 6 & 20:

  • Diverted: Indigenous Stewardship and Saving Great Salt Lake, a debut documentary film. "Amid the ongoing ecological crisis facing Great Salt Lake, this film presents an urgent, inspiring perspective: Indigenous stewardship is key to restoring balance. The film, directed by Valene Peratrovich and produced by McCaulee Blackburn and Cristian Martinez, highlights interviews with leaders such as Darren and Brad Parry of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, Elizabeth Kronk Warner of the University of Utah, and activist Carl Moore. The first screening at Fisher Brewing Company will include a live Q&A panel with the filmmakers and participants. Both events are free and open to the public. This film is part of Wake the Great Salt Lake, a public art initiative supported by the Salt Lake City Arts Council and the Mayor’s Office, dedicated to inspiring care, creativity, and action for the lake’s future.
