Fourth of July Special on Free Speech, Freedom of the Press, Peacable Assembly, Civics, and Poetry Happens

Tonight's lineup:

  • Kimberly Bojorquez, Mack Jones and Ty Bianucci of the UVU Review, the independent, student-run newspaper at Utah Valley University. Last month, the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honored them with the Sunshine Award last month.

  • From the Families Belong Together + Free Rally at the Utah State Capitol building last Saturday, excerpts of speeches from Centro Civico Mexicano's Brandy Farmer and Ermiya Fanaeian of March for Our Lives SLC

  • Robert Austin, the K-12 Social Studies Specialist at the State Board of Education, talked about teaching civic identity and character in Utah schools. That was the topic of A Place for All, a new conference designed to strengthen civics education in Utah.

  • From the Families Belong Together + Free Rally at the Utah State Capitol building last Saturday, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), KRCL's Ma Black, and Leticia Garcia

  • Trish Hopkinson of Rock Canyon Poets talked about opportunities to hear or share poetry this month in Utah

  • Poetry Happens with Michael McLane, featured poet at this month's poetry reading and open mic, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at Pioneer Book in Provo. Use the media player below to hear McLane share two of his own poems — one a meditation on the transience and decay of storage space on Beck Street, another on the ecological disaster of the coal seam fire burning for decades beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania.
