U of U Environmental Humanities Community Practitioner in Residence, Olivia Juarez, is conducting 1-hour oral history interviews with people of Hispanic/ Latino heritage with personal or family stories related to Parley's Canyon, Millcreek Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, the Wasatch Back (i.e., Park City, local ski resorts, Empire Pass, etc.), people with stories about Hispanics/Latinos in relation to this region who are no longer with us or unable to speak. Apr 4: Guns to Gardens Discussion and Demonstration | 12-3:30 PM @ Nuh Eevaat Garden, east of Pioneer Memorial Theatre, University of Utah. Nancy Halden of the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah explains this unique event: "A live forge demonstration featuring a skilled blacksmith transforming surrendered firearms into functional garden tools." Apr 9-10: Arms Around America | 7:30 PM @ Kingsbury Hall, SLC. Dan Froot, of his eponymous L.A.-based theater group, joins the show to talk about AAA, which is based on stories of families whose lives have been shaped by guns. Book-length oral histories of families in South Florida, Western Montana, and Southern California were transformed into audio dramas that became a podcast and eventually a live show. Kitchen Table: Following each performance, audience members are invited to a "kitchen table" discussion with subject matter experts from all sides of these issues. The discussions are moderated on Thursday by Dr. Kurt Michael and on Friday by Dr. Aaron Fischer.
Apr 29: Ethics Explored at the Intersection of Arts & Health | 12-1 PM online via Osher Lunch & Learn Lecture Series. Facilitated by Gretchen Case from the Center for Health Ethics, Arts, and Humanities and Dan Froot of Dan Froot & Company, this discussion will focus on the ethical questions that arise when telling stories publicly that involve emotionally difficult or traumatic experiences. Medical providers often share stories from their clinical work to explore or illustrate critical issues, and the ethical conundrums associated with talking about medical encounters are well-known.
