U Students Talk Open-Carry on Campus in Wake of Kirk Assassination at UVU

Thursday, Sept. 11: RadioACTive passes the mic to Voices Amplified, a new generation of journalists from the University of Utah. Tonight: Students discuss their perspective and reporting process concerning open-carry on campus, where security is being increased in the wake of yesterday's assassination of Charlie Kirk at UVU. The Other Side Donuts taste-test and check-in. Plus, homegrown music from The Hit.

Homegrown music with The Hit

The Hit calls Provo, UT, home. Band members include Gabi Deucher, Aidan Benson and Connor Armstrong. Their techno, pop, punk, and jam band songs sound like The Dare or Charli XCX meets Fontaines DC.

A collaboration between the University of Utah, Amplify Utah, and KRCL 90.9fm in SLC, UT

Gun Safety on Campus: Brayden Ortega talks with Emerson Hagy, a reporter at The Daily Utah Chronicle, about open carry policy on campus and UoU student Kacie Flolo, who grew up around guns. The trio also talks about the impact of the assassination of Charlie Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem yesterday.

  • The University of Utah is working with local, state and federal partners to ensure students feel safe on campus. They will be increasing patrols to make police officers available to speak to students, faculty and staff about their concerns. Additional support and resources are available at the SafeU website, through the SafeUT app, and through the U’s Basic Needs Collective. More resources posted here.

  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Line directs callers in need to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network and Utah’s integrated crisis response system. Callers from Utah will be connected to the Utah Crisis Line, staffed by certified crisis workers at Huntsman Mental Health Institute. 988 is confidential, no-cost, and available 24/7/365, connecting those experiencing mental health, substance use, or suicidal crises with trained crisis counselors. Access is available through every landline, cell phone, and voice-over-Internet device in the United States. 988 call services will be available in Spanish, along with interpretation services in over 150 languages.

The Other Side Donuts: Reporter Frank Regalado catches up with The Other Side Donuts, complete with an on-air taste test. Robbie Myrick, Director of Human First Culture for The Other Side Village, shares more of the story, which isn't just about donuts. 

  • The Other Side Village is a master-planned community offering lifelong supportive housing for those overcoming chronic homelessness. It is available to anyone ready to make a change. However, Myrick notes, “change doesn’t come easily.” To learn more, click here.
